YAASPA!

Young Aspiring Americans for Social & Political Activism

Founded in 2010 by Dr. Mackey and her husband, YAASPA was created to address the challenges youth face in navigating academic and career development in the social sciences. While career pathways in STEM, business, fine arts, and health sciences have been established, few initiatives focus on fostering self-efficacy for youth pursuing social justice careers. YAASPA fills this gap through community organizing, advocacy, and programs such as civic engagement courses, scholarship fairs, social sciences and policy institutes, and partnerships with colleges & universities. By fostering academic and career self-efficacy, racial identity awareness, civic literacy, and engagement, YAASPA empowers youth to become co-creators of their futures rather than passive participants in labor market-driven pathways.

What Are Our Youth Saying?

-

“I learned more of vocabulary and ways to deal with my emotions instead of anger, and I would utilize this in school when talking about race and trying to educate people.”

-

“Yes, I’ll especially use mental health to make sure that the people close to me are doing well. I’ll also use skills like public speaking to stand up for my family and community and encourage them to also speak up.”

-

“I think mostly all the presenters that came and visit us have taught me a lot more about business and the laws that came and I got to interact and learn more things about something that I was personally interested in pursuing.”
